    Northeast man admits ties to terror group

    A Castor Gardens resident has admitted that he lied on immigration forms about his ties to a pro-Islamic, anti-Western terrorist group in his native Afghanistan and will be deported, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Hayatullah Dawari, 62, pleaded guilty on Friday to two counts of immigration fraud and was sentenced to two years in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Stewart Dalzell immediately suspended Dawari’s sentence and ordered him to relinquish his status as a legal permanent resident of the U.S. He will be banned from ever returning to the country.

    Promoting peace in the Northeast

    District Attorney Seth Williams led a contingent of city prosecutors who joined police officers and Northeast community leaders in a Ride for Peace on Saturday morning. The bicycle tour highlighted the 2nd Police District Advisory Council’s annual Community Day at Target, Bustleton and Bleigh avenues. The cyclists rode 12 miles through portions of Castor Gardens, Oxford Circle, Summerdale, Crescentville and Lawndale with an escort of police vehicles in an effort to promote healthy, nonviolent activities. The route passed several locations of recent gun violence in the 2nd Police District. Other participants included Capt. Frank Palumbo, commander of the 2nd district; and Lynn and Larry Genetti, the chairwoman and treasurer of the 2nd PDAC.

    Castor Gardens man arrested for alleged affiliation with terrorist group

    Federal authorities last week arrested a Castor Gardens resident on charges he lied to immigration officials when he entered the United States by neglecting to mention he was affiliated with an extremist terrorist group.
