    Moving on up

Frankford sophomore QB Mikey Morell leads Pioneers to 20-13 win over Central.

On Friday afternoon, one of the best quarterbacks in Frankford football history took in his alma mater’s division game against Central on the sideline as a spectator. Tim DiGiorgio had to like what he saw from one of the youngest signal callers the hallowed program has ever seen.

    Twice as nice

After two record-breaking seasons as Frankford’s quarterback, Tim DiGiorgio parlayed his success under center for the Pioneers into a spot on the Temple University football team. With the Owls on a bye week, it would have been easy for him to kick back on his couch, safely sheltered from the frigid early-November temperatures.

    Pioneer punch

For Frankford football, three lopsided non-league losses to open the 2013 campaign now seem like ancient history.

High School Football Round-Up: Week 3

Outlook: The Railsplitters have sandwiched the season’s only win (a 6-2 victory in Week 2 over Overbrook) around two ugly losses, first a 47-21 defeat at Truman to open the year followed by last week’s 31-0 shutout at the hands of Upper Dublin. Lincoln hasn’t seen much develop in its rushing attack (LeRon Strothers leads the way with 56 yards on 20 carries), but QB Devon Thompkins has shown signs of improvement in taking over for the graduated Miguel Sanchez. Though he’s thrown only one TD pass so far, Thompkins has completed 28 of 60 passes for 306 yards, and is developing a nice chemistry with Ryan transfer Travon Williams, who has caught half of Thompkins’ passes for 164 yards. Head coach Ed McGettigan’s team will continue trying to get better when it opens up Class AAAA Silver Division play at South Philadelphia; after two defeats to open their season, the Rams responded last week with a 33-14 win over Valley Forge Military Academy.

    Frankford’s finest

Facing the loss of star quarterback Tim DiGiorgio as well as declining numbers, Frankford faces questions heading into the season. Luckily for the 2012 Public League champs, head coach Will Doggett is still running the show.

    The comeback kids

There was a brief time, probably somewhere around the evening of April 19, when Juan Namnun thought his Frankford baseball team might be doomed.

Martelli, student-athletes shine at sports banquet

St. Hubert’s Claire Alminde was among the last student-athletes to be called to the podium to receive her award at the 28th annual Northeast Sports Awards banquet, but she seemed to speak for all the others when she stepped up to the microphone.
