Lawncrest residents hear about zoning, preschool and PAL center

Lawncrest Community Association last week listened to a bid by the homeowners at 212 Robbins St. to build a large storage shed in their rear yard.

The homeowners were represented by attorney Vern Anastasio.

The shed was proposed to be about 13 x 22 feet. The homeowners need a variance from the Zoning Board of Adjustment to build.

LCA members made a motion to limit the size to 10 x 13 feet, while waiving the requirement for a setback from the neighboring property. That motion passed, 26-5.

In other news from the meeting, James M. Campbell Funeral Home, 500 Benner St., was named Business of the Month.

Campbell Funeral Home, 500 Benner St., is Lawncrest Community Association’s Business of the Month.

State Rep. Jared Solomon provided some neighborhood updates. He and City Councilman Brian O’Neill have each secured $20,000 for signage and greenery at the World War I monument at Cottman, Oxford and Rising Sun avenues. As for the building at Trinity Church Oxford, at Rising Sun and Longshore avenues, the KinderCare preschool is expected to open around May 1. The state has earmarked $1 million to return a Police Athletic League center to the site, though another $1 million needs to be raised. The long-delayed themed banners will eventually be flown on the Rising Sun, Bustleton, Castor and Cottman avenue commercial corridors.

Lawncrest Library, 6098 Rising Sun Ave., will host Edible Alphabet: Learn English through Cooking on Mondays, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., through March 30. The free classes are for adults. Visit freelibrary.org/ediblealphabet.

Members observed a moment of silence in memory of Mara Gara and Mary S. Monaco.

Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Tuesday, March 17, at 7 p.m. at Monsignor Mortimer Parish Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
