Local church offers help for people with dementia and their caregivers

St. Luke’s United Church of Christ visited the Parkwood Civic Association to offer help.

The Parkwood Civic Association last week welcomed the Rev. Terri McNamara, pastor of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ.

McNamara’s church is at 10151 Bustleton Ave., next to George Washington High School.

The pastor promoted the church’s Memory Cafe, a free, non-clinical monthly meeting for people with dementia and their caregivers. The meetings take place on the third Saturday of the month.

In other news from the Nov. 15 meeting, civic association president Matt Darragh announced that a house on the 12400 block of Sweet Briar Road won the Halloween decorating contest. The residents won a Wawa gift card.

An aide to state Rep. Martina White announced that her office, at 10752 Bustleton Ave., will have a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs representative available to help veterans on Monday, Dec. 4. White’s office also has applications for the state Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, and is collecting winter jackets and accessories to donate to a charity. White supported a state grant for $45,260 that will fund an environmental assessment and remedial investigation at Parkwood Youth Organization.

The district office of state Sen. John Sabatina Jr. also has LIHEAP applications, according to aide Mike McAleer. The office, at 12361 Academy Road, also distributes recycling bins.

The offices of City Councilman Brian O’Neill are accepting donations for Toys for Tots. The Parkwood-area office is at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.

U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle has moved his district office to 8572 Bustleton Ave.

John Fritz announced that T-shirts are available that read, “Parkwood Manor, Where All LIves Matter,” on the front and, “Hate Has No Home Here,” on the back. Shirts are available in sizes from youth medium to XXXXL. Call 215–873–6077 to place an order.

Parkwood Civic Association will not meet in December. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. at St. Anselm hall, 12670 Dunks Ferry Road. ••
