There’s something about fresh-picked corn (and tomatoes and peaches) at roadside stands in New Jersey that makes my car immediately pull to the side of the road. Last weekend, on the ride home from the Shore, the signs reading “Fresh Corn - $2.99 a Dozen” forced me to make a bee-line to the roadside produce stand. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Jersey corn is coming into season, and ready for harvest.
Hip, hip, huzzah! On President’s Day, we shout out a hearty hurrah to George, our first president. We set aside a day in February each year to honor our Founding Fathers, and so we should. But wait. What about Martha?
When he visits your house on Christmas Eve, don’t disappoint that man in the red suit and white beard. A batch or two of homemade cookies is a sure way to share the jollies of the jingle-bell season. After all, a journey of about 3,400 miles, as the reindeer fly, is worthy of a special treat. Everyone loves Christmas cookies, especially the original, jolly, Jelly Belly. But he does get some cookie consumption competition at my house around holiday time.
