A school board will be nominated to replace the dissolved School Reform Commission.
Otis Hackney, the city’s chief education officer, spoke at the recent Take Back Your Neighborhood meeting, explaining the process of replacing the School Reform Commission with a Board of Education.
Following Hackney’s appearance, the city extended the nomination deadline to Wednesday, Feb. 7.

By Feb. 28, the 13-member nominating panel will recommend 27 candidates to Mayor Jim Kenney. In early March, Kenney will deliver his budget address, which will surely include ways to fund public schools. Sometime later in March, he will announce his appointments. The board will assume governance of the School District of Philadelphia by July 1.
Board members can serve a maximum of three four-year terms.
Several people complained about the process, with some demanding an elected school board and others contending that Kenney will have too much power.
