Holmesburg Civic approves motorcycle club clubhouse bid

The Holmesburg Civic Association unanimously approved a bid by the Philadelphia Centurions Motorcycle Club, which is seeking a zoning variance for its clubhouse at 7347 Melrose St.

The nonprofit fraternal club is made up of about two-dozen police officers, firefighters and government employees. It used to meet at SmokeEaters Pub until it closed. That bar, at Frankford and Sheffield avenues, is under new ownership and will reopen in the fall.

The club has been in its current home for two years, but needs a variance to conform to the building’s light industrial zoning classification. Its neighbors signed a petition backing the club.

Members support charitable causes. This will be the fourth year they collect toys for Shriners Hospital for Children’s Christmas in July. They also support police survivors’ funds and the American Cancer Society’s annual bike-a-thon from Philadelphia to Mays Landing, New Jersey.

The civic group gave its OK by a 14–0 vote.

In other news from the June 10 meeting:

• Lt. Andrew Brown, of the Philadelphia Fire Department, encouraged members to stay out of the city’s creeks, streams and rivers for safety reasons.

Brown explained that flash floods and sudden water runoff make water levels unpredictable and dangerous. He added that water runoff from streets and lawns pollutes the waterways with trash, chemicals and animal waste.

The fire official recommended that people use one of the more than 80 public pools that are open this summer.

• Ame Dorminy, of Philadelphia’s Animal Care and Control, distributed city dog license applications, good for a year.

City and state laws require that all dogs 4 months and older be licensed. Animal control provides free rides home for lost dogs with license tags.

Wearing a dog license will increase the time a lost dog is held from 48 hours to 10 days.

• Holmesburg Library, at 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue), has a couple of ongoing programs, both sponsored by the Friends of Holmesburg Library.

On Tuesdays through Aug. 5, there will be programs for kids 12 and older from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Activities include a movie, a Lego workshop, Wii games, a pizza party and raffles. Refreshments will be provided.

On Thursdays in July, school-age kids are welcome to make crafts at 3 p.m.

To register or for more information, call 215–685–8756.

• Holmesburg Civic Association will meet again on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7:15 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, at Rhawn and Ditman streets. ••
