City Councilman Bobby Henon and Philadelphia’s Department of Parks and Recreation have been teaming up to remove and prune more than 1,000 problematic trees from the 6th Councilmanic District in recent weeks. Henon obtained funding for the ongoing project, nearly $200,000, from the unused portion of the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative budget.
District Attorney Seth Williams led a contingent of city prosecutors who joined police officers and Northeast community leaders in a Ride for Peace on Saturday morning. The bicycle tour highlighted the 2nd Police District Advisory Council’s annual Community Day at Target, Bustleton and Bleigh avenues. The cyclists rode 12 miles through portions of Castor Gardens, Oxford Circle, Summerdale, Crescentville and Lawndale with an escort of police vehicles in an effort to promote healthy, nonviolent activities. The route passed several locations of recent gun violence in the 2nd Police District. Other participants included Capt. Frank Palumbo, commander of the 2nd district; and Lynn and Larry Genetti, the chairwoman and treasurer of the 2nd PDAC.
