The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, last week opened the exhibit Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss

The exhibit seeks to reveal the mystery of the ocean’s greatest depths and invites visitors to explore newly discovered life forms and shipwrecks, including the Titanic.

Visitors will learn about creatures that live on the ocean floor in total darkness. There are specimens, an ocean-themed book nook and video screens.

The exhibit runs through July 24.

The academy held a preview last Thursday for the media and third-graders at the nearby Russell Byers Charter School.

The media and students heard from Marina McDougall, the academy’s new vice president of experience and engagement, and Mark Sabaj, collections manager of fishes, who showcased dead ratfish and shark jaws. There was also a “cart of curiosity,” along with crafts and an up-close look at specimens.

“It’s the deep oceans that we almost know nothing about,” Sabaj said. ••
