Lawncrest Community Association gets updates on crime and auto business lot

Lawncrest residents heard crime updates and an update on an auto body parking lot that was recommended to have its expansion rejected.

The Lawncrest Community Association last week welcomed Capt. Thomas McLean, commander of the 2nd Police District, and community relations officer Mark Mroz.

McLean and Mroz provided crime updates.

LCA members also received an update on a proposed use of a lot for parking cars at Speedy Auto, 100 Comly St.

The lot is located in Cheltenham, behind Newtown Avenue in Lawncrest.

Sergio Polyakov has owned the property for 20 years and wants to park up to 30 cars on the vacant lot.

The Cheltenham Planning Commission has recommended that the Cheltenham Zoning Hearing Board reject the proposal. The zoning board was scheduled to meet Sept. 25, but the hearing was continued to Nov. 19.

In other news from the Oct. 16 LCA meeting, organizers for the Lawncrest 4th of July Celebration announced that St. William Catholic Church members will be parade grand marshals. St. William will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.

State Rep. Jared Solomon and Northeast High School will present Pennsylvania Ballet II on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. The title is Youth Dance Festival: Shining a Spotlight on Dance Education. Admission is free. Northeast is at 1601 Cottman Ave.

Solomon will hold a Senior Fair on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, 1009 Unruh Ave. There will be state and local government resources, representatives from hospitals and insurance companies, local businesses, senior homes, light refreshments, free flu shots, blood pressure screenings, giveaways and a drop-off area for expired medication. The Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. at St. William parish hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
