After spending 23 years as president of the Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Al Taubenberger said goodbye during an event on Monday night at Canstatter’s. He received a standing ovation from friends and colleagues, including former City Councilmen Jack Kelly and Dan McElhatton, PECO Energy’s Ed McBride, PNC Bank’s Frank Porrazza, educator and lawyer Ruth Horwitz and former Frankford Hospital executive John B. Neff.
State Rep. John Sabatina Jr. edged Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 president John McNesby to earn the Democratic nomination in the 5th Senatorial District special election.
Two members of the Northeast Philadelphia-based Ironworkers Local 401, Francis Sean O’Donnell and William Gillin, on Monday pleaded guilty to conspiracy, arson and related charges, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced. Both men will be sentenced in January.
EPIC to meet June 26
The Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce last week held a reception at Torresdale-Frankford Country Club for Sister Francesca Onley, who is retiring as president of Holy Family University. Sister Francesca became the school’s fourth president in 1981, and she has overseen much physical growth of the institution. She also led Holy Family’s transition from college to university status in 2002.
Former Pennsylvania House Speaker John Perzel has insistently proclaimed his innocence since November 2009, when a grand jury indicted him and nine others on campaign-related corruption charges.
