    Local man awarded for outstanding community service

    The Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia presented Somerton resident Ruben David with its 2014 Outstanding Service to the Community Award on Feb. 14. The award recognizes an engineer who has over the course of his career provided professional and personal service above and beyond the call of duty to the Delaware Valley community. David was honored during Delaware Valley Engineers Week, which is part of a national engineering observance.

It’s been so cold in Pennsylvania this winter that I’m surprised that Phil even ventured out to check his shadow this week. Olympic Alert: It’s warmer in Sochi!

Frost Quakes? They did happen in Ontario, Canada, on Christmas Eve. Apparently, some kids there thought that the loud snap sounds and the shakes were reindeer on the roof. Closer to home, parts of Ohio experienced Frost Quakes in 2011. It’s winter!


    Catching Fire movie just as good as the book

    The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins burst out onto the scene in 2008 and was a huge success among young readers (and, eventually adults). The movie last year also was a big hit, and the sequel has understandably been one of the most anticipated films of the year.

    Pumpkins, native to North America, have always played an important part in Thanksgiving meals. Evidently, the first settlers were not dazzled by the American Indians’ gift to them of pumpkins. But after scourge, pestilence and death, the colonists who survived the first harsh winter here changed their tune. Pumpkins became an important food source.
