Lawncrest approves event space on Rising Sun

The Lawncrest Community Association last week unanimously approved a request by the owners of 6410 Rising Sun Ave. to open an event space.

A Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing is set for Aug. 31.

The space, on a commercial corridor, is for fewer than 50 people. A Philadelphia Parking Authority lot across the street accommodates 20 vehicles.

Events will include showers, weddings and birthday and graduation parties.

The schedule will be Fridays through Sundays, with no event going beyond 11 p.m. and no more than one event per day. Security guards will be on hand after 9 p.m., and an attendant will discourage double parking. There will also be cameras, lighting and a sprinkler system.

No alcohol will be served, nor will there be cooking. Waste Management will collect trash.

The rental rate starts at $1,300.

In other news from the Aug. 18 meeting:

• The Lawncrest Recreation Center Advisory Council will offer free movie nights on the second Thursday of the month at dusk at the Lawncrest Recreation Center outdoor stage. The dates are Sept. 8 and Oct. 13. Next month’s movie will be The Mighty. Bring a blanket or chair.

Meanwhile, the advisory council will hold a 5K race on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $30, which includes a T-shirt and medals for winners. To volunteer, be a T-shirt sponsor or to register to run, go to https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Philadelphia/Lawncrest5K.

• The zoning board turned down a proposed variance by the owner of a property at 615 Glenview St. who wanted to convert the property from a duplex to a triplex.

• The public is invited to a town hall meeting on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at PATH, 1919 Cottman Ave., to discuss a possible subway on Roosevelt Boulevard.

• The International WeLoveU Foundation and state Rep. Jared Solomon invite the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. for a new park at Loretto and Cranford avenues, an area once an overgrown dumping ground. Refreshments will be served,

• The Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at St. William’s Monsignor James E. Mortimer Memorial Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
