Max Myers could get improved pool area

Improvements could include lounge chairs, umbrellas and shaded areas to give it a kind of country club feel.

Members of the Take Back Your Neighborhood civic association learned last week about a proposal to beautify the swimming pool area at Max Myers Playground.

The information was relayed by neighbor Pam Baranackie and Andrew Dalzell, chief of staff for state Rep. Jared Solomon.

Improvements could include lounge chairs, umbrellas and shaded areas to give it a kind of country club feel, like the pool at Lawncrest Recreation Center.

The estimated cost is $10,000, and the civic association plans to apply for a Philadelphia Activities Fund grant, using the money for the pool improvements instead of the annual Northeast Celebration.

Supporters of the plan to improve the pool area will also seek donations. They think the new-look pool will be a nice complement to the new playground equipment being installed.

The pool is scheduled to open in late June.

In other news from the April 16 meeting:

• Linda Breitstein, a manager for the Penn Project for Civic Engagement, encouraged people to attend the Board of Education listening tour, sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Education. The local event is on Wednesday, May 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave.

• Mark Mroz, community relations officer in the 2nd Police District, told the crowd that there has been an increase in thefts from autos, particularly rims and tires taken off Honda vehicles. Mroz also urged business owners and employees who are being robbed to give up the money so they can remain safe.

• Take Back Your Neighborhood will meet again on Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St. ••
