Republicans have nominated Roslyn Ross in the Nov. 8 special election in the 9th Councilmanic District.

Ross, a former Democrat, lives in Mount Airy. Her top issues are crime, education and more programs for senior citizens. She plans to knock on doors and reach voters by phone and will run for a full four-year term next year.

“I’m a boots-on-the-ground candidate,” she said.

The district consists of Lawncrest, Summerdale and portions of Oxford Circle, Castor Gardens, Burholme and Northwest Philadelphia.

The seat is vacant due to the resignation of Cherelle Parker, who is running for mayor. Ross will face Democrat Anthony Phillips and Libertarian Yusuf Jackson.

Meanwhile, Republicans have chosen James Whitehead to run in the special election in the 7th Councilmanic District, which includes Frankford, Northwood, Wissinoming and portions of Castor Gardens and Lower Mayfair. The other candidates are Democrat Quetcy Lozada and Libertarian Randall Justus.

The seat is vacant following the resignation of Maria Quinones Sanchez, who is running for mayor.

There are also two vacancies for at-large seats that will be filled on Nov. 8.

In one race, the candidates are Democrat Jim Harrity, Republican Drew Murray and Libertarian Poetica Bey.

In the other race, the candidates are Democrat Sharon Vaughn, Republican Jim Hasher and Libertarian Marc Jurchak. ••
