Kyle Lowder
Emmy-nominated daytime actor and stage star Kyle Lowder shows he’s more than just a handsome face as he brings his vocal talents and acting skills to The Media Theatre’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Lowder appears in the title role through Jan. 5.
The musical is based on the “coat of many colors” story from the Bible’s Book of Genesis, and features such songs as “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”
In the story, Joseph is mistreated due to jealousy by his brothers, but gains prestige and wealth due to his never-ending faith and self-control.
Lowder says he’s a big fan of musical theater and especially Andrew Lloyd Webber: “I love his score for this show and it’s a privilege to be singing such iconic songs during the holiday season.”
In fact, Lowder’s love of musical theater goes back to when he was just 5 and his parents took him to see Cats. He admits from then on he was hooked.
“I was so fascinated by the show,” Lowder recalled. “But I didn’t see it as a kid just being entertained by a bunch of moving, living cats, but rather as people playing their roles and this was their job. And how lucky they were to have such wonderful jobs.”
Growing up, Lowder said coming from a very athletic family he was heavily involved in sports, mainly football and baseball. After high school, he briefly attended the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University before dropping out to pursue his dream of acting in Los Angeles — a dream he couldn’t get out of his head.
Modeling for awhile to “pay the bills,” he was finally spotted by a casting director, auditioned for the role of Brady Black on Days of Our Lives, and was put under contract in 2000. In 2003 he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award as Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series.
He played the role for five years before moving on to take over the role of Rick Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful from 2007–2011.
During his run on the shows, writers occasionally showcased his singing talents by presenting him in musical numbers.
Today, Lowder spends much of his time showing off those talents on the stage.
In fact, he just starred as Stacee Jaxx in the Las Vegas company of Broadway’s Rock of Ages.
He says he’s now thoroughly enjoying his stage work.
“I love trying to create characters, especially Joseph. I can’t relate to him at all, except for his determination and perseverance to be something in life, but I have to figure out how I would react in that situation, otherwise he wouldn’t seem real.”
And although the show is often seen as “campy,” Lowder says his job is to do more than simply dance across the stage and sing catchy tunes.
“I want to portray the character on a deeper level so that audiences can relate on that, too.”
Considering himself very fortunate to be doing what he’s doing, Lowder adds that “anybody who has a chance to do something they love for a living is truly blessed. The fact that I’m one of those people makes me consider myself extremely lucky and very, very grateful.” ••
