After spending 23 years as president of the Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Al Taubenberger said goodbye during an event on Monday night at Canstatter’s. He received a standing ovation from friends and colleagues, including former City Councilmen Jack Kelly and Dan McElhatton, PECO Energy’s Ed McBride, PNC Bank’s Frank Porrazza, educator and lawyer Ruth Horwitz and former Frankford Hospital executive John B. Neff.
The year flies by and its highlights tend to become hazy in our minds. With the rush of headlines spanning soldiers who died in combat to a career politician who turned criminal, the Northeast has seen better years.
Four years ago, Republican City Councilman Brian O’Neill faced a fairly stiff challenge from Democrat Sean McAleer, but the incumbent rolled to re-election with 58 percent of the vote despite Michael Nutter’s strength at the top of the ticket.
