    In Summertime, Smokey the Bear increases his vigilance. But he need not fear every whiff of smoke. After all, it’s barbecue season.     City pools now open for summer

    As of July 1, all city-operated pools will have been opened for the summer season following a two-week kickoff program. Pools are now open at numerous Northeast Philadelphia recreation centers and public facilities including Max Myers, Fox Chase, Vogt, Lincoln High, Simpson, Jardel, American Legion park in Tacony, Lawncrest, Mitchell, Jacobs and Houseman.

    Confucius wrote about them. Alexander the Great and then Julius Caesar brought them to the Mediterranean region through trade. Early settlers brought them to the New World. Luther Burbank, the “Plant Wizard” botanist, horticulturist and pomologist (cultivator of fruit trees), grew, studied and documented plum trees grown in California, and produced new hybrid varieties.
