Fallen Heroes Run raises money for scholarship, Local 22 widows fund

The weekend rain may have washed out other activities, but the Fallen Heroes Run still went on in memory of fallen firefighter Daniel Sweeney.

The annual Mayfair May Fair was canceled on Saturday because of rain, but the Fallen Heroes Run went on as planned.

The Mayfair Civic Association, Business Association, Community Development Corporation and Business Improvement District had planned live music, food trucks, a beer garden, crafters, 15th Police District Advisory Council information tables and milkweed planting.

The Philly Soft Pretzel Factory Customer Appreciation Day, in honor of 20 years in business, was also shelved.

The Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run was held in memory of Daniel Sweeney, a 25-year-old six-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department who died in April 2012 while battling a five-alarm inferno at an abandoned East Kensington warehouse.

Race organizers presented Sweeney’s parents, Dave and Marian, with a plaque and told them that their son’s name is on a plaque in Mayfair Memorial Playground. Sweeney’s niece and goddaughter, Stacey, was also in attendance. Dave Sweeney is a retired fire captain.

Nicholas Volpe was the winner of the 5k run.

Proceeds went to the Firefighter Daniel Sweeney Memorial Scholarship Fund, which benefits students in Archdiocese of Philadelphia high schools, and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 22 widows fund. ••
