Peace Day to benefit boxing club

The Block Gives Back on Saturday held a Peace and Play Day at Carmella Playground in Frankford.

The day featured remarks from former and likely future Democratic state representative candidate Joe Hohenstein, who credited the young people of The Block for being proactive in the fight against street violence.

Activities included live music, a disc jockey, volleyball, musical chairs, arts and crafts, raffles and face-painting by rec leader Kristin Wisniewski.

Proceeds went to the Jack Costello Boxing Club.

The Tacony-based boxing club had a table at the event, promoting matches it will be sanctioning on Saturday, Sept. 30, starting at 2 p.m. at Katie O’Donnell’s Irish Pub, 4501 Woodhaven Road.

The bouts will feature men and women union members. All proceeds will go to A Lift for a Vet, a charity of the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local №5. The union has installed more than 75 lifts in the homes of veterans.

The cost is $25. For tickets, call 215–397–8706.

Anyone interested in fighting can call Pat Costello (215–332–3553), Tim Costello (267–688–5787) or Brian Costello (267–231–0227).

The rain date is Oct. 1. ••
