Haniyyah Sharpe-Brown, assistant director of communications for the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy, encouraged members of the Take Back Your Neighborhood civic association to volunteer for the agency. Sharpe-Brown spoke at the Dec. 21 meeting. The commission’s motto is “Because Adult Learning Works.”
Literacy classes are available to anyone 16 or older, and volunteer learning coaches/tutors are needed. The commission has more than 30 partner organizations.
Classes are available for adult basic education, GED or English as a Second Language online or in neighborhood settings.

In other news from the meeting, the group looked back at its successes of 2015 and coming attractions for 2016.
About 2,000 people attended the Northeast Celebration in August, while the group fed some 200 people at a Thanksgiving eve dinner at Calvary Christian Church, 6000–38 Roosevelt Blvd. Catholic Community Services assisted at the dinner.
Looking ahead, an overhaul of Max Myers Playground is coming. Also, the group’s after-school basketball program will again take place at Spruance Elementary School. Teams will be entered in the Sonny Hill League.
Take Back Your Neighborhood usually meets on the third Monday of the month, but the meeting spot at Max Myers will be closed for Martin Luther King Day. The group will meet on Monday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. at Max Myers, 1601 Hellerman St. ••
