A big crowd turned out last week to thank John McNesby for his 17 years as president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5.

The gathering took place on Nov. 9, the eve of McNesby’s last day on the job before he takes a position with the state.

McNesby is credited with helping active and retired officers earn a total increase of 55 percent in wages and medical benefits during his tenure; comforting the families of fallen officers; and moving the FOP from 1336 Spring Garden St. to its spacious building – with a large bar and ballroom – at 11630 Caroline Road.

McNesby’s wife, daughters and granddaughter were on hand. Wife Patty described him as the best husband, dad, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Pennsylvania FOP President Joe Regan, the FOP Lodge 5 Auxiliary and the FOP staff and executive board all honored McNesby.

Elected officials on hand included state Rep. Martina White, state Sen. Jim Dillon, Common Pleas Court Judge Anne Marie Coyle and City Councilmen Brian O’Neill and Mike Driscoll.

Guests enjoyed free food, an open bar and DJ Mark Mroz, the community relations officer in the 2nd Police District.

McNesby thanked his staff, including those who work at the bar and in catering and handle medical benefits. He’s also proud that the FOP has become a political force, pointing to its role in helping O’Neill to a landslide re-election last week.

Roosevelt Poplar has been elected to replace McNesby.

“Pop, you’re going to do great,” McNesby said. “We’re not going to miss a beat here at the FOP.” ••
