The Lawncrest Community Association last week unanimously approved an illuminated sign proposed by Cedar Grove Christian Academy, 6445 Bingham St.
The school was represented by lawyer Henry Clinton. Principal Jeff Howard also spoke. Former principal Art Hummel was also in attendance.
Cedar Grove has been active in the community as a location for voting, coronavirus vaccines and youth sports and for cooperating with police by sharing camera footage when there is a violent crime in the area.
The Philadelphia Protestant Home and Lawndale Baptist Church have similar signs that Cedar Grove is proposing.
Cedar Grove plans to use the sign to promote open houses, registration and other events. The school agreed to advertise community events such as the Lawncrest 4th of July Celebration. The sign will be illuminated from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The only complaint came from a man who said the sign – 4 feet wide by 5½ feet high – was too big.
A Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing is set for Sept. 27.
In other news from the Aug. 17 meeting:
• Capt. Marc Metellus and Lt. Joe Mortimer, of the 2nd Police District, addressed the crowd. Neighbors were concerned about a murder earlier this month on the 5800 block of Rising Sun Ave. A 26-year-old man was shot on Thursday, Aug. 3, at 11:21 p.m. and was pronounced dead a short time later at Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Residents continue to be unhappy with motorists double parking next to bump-outs that were built to capture stormwater. They hope police take action or the Water Department posts signs prohibiting double parking.
• The 215 People’s Alliance will hold a cleanup on Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon, on the 5600 block of Newtown Ave. (Snake Road). The community is invited to participate.
• Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at St. William’s Monsignor James E. Mortimer Memorial Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
