Car stolen with sleeping child in backseat

A man who left his running car parked outside a Northwood convenience store at 2:30 a.m. with his 6-year-old stepson sleeping in the backseat ran into some unexpected trouble on Tuesday.

Someone jumped into the driver’s seat and stole it, police say.

Fortunately, it took cops only about a half-hour to recover the car, which had been abandoned on a nearby street with the child still sound asleep inside, Chief Inspector Scott Small said to reporters at the scene.

The theft occurred outside the 7-Eleven at Bridge Street and Oxford Avenue. Small said that the child was uninjured. Police have released no information about possible suspects in the car theft. ••
