Rod Sandmeyer retires from family steel company

Sandmeyer Steel Company, a leading global supplier of stainless steel, nickel alloy and titanium plate and plate products based in Somerton, announced the retirement of Executive Vice President Rodney C. Sandmeyer, after 38 years with the company.

Before joining the company, Sandmeyer worked with Merrill Lynch after graduating from the University of North Carolina. During his six years with Merrill, he served as internal operations manager with stints in New York, Lansing and Cincinnati, achieving the title of assistant vice president.

He joined the family-owned and managed company in 1985.

Ronald P. Sandmeyer Jr., Rod’s older brother and company president and CEO, said, “The ‘brother-thing’ rarely works in companies. Even more rare is successfully navigating a business through three family generations. Rod and I have succeeded in both and, in fact, are now working hard on transitioning to the fourth generation of family leadership.”

“As we continue the process of transitioning to the next generation of leaders at our company, we feel we are well positioned to continue the legacies of our founder, our grandfather, Paul C. Sandmeyer, and our father, Ronald P. Sandmeyer Sr.,” Ron said.

Rod was active in a number of outside organizations during his career, including the Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center, and served on the boards of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and CUE Inc., an organization dedicated to assisting employers in establishing positive employee relations and forward-looking workplace practices.

Rod will remain active on the company’s board after retirement. He looks forward to spending more time with his wife, children and grandchildren, traveling, cycling, hiking and sitting on the beach at the Jersey shore.
