City Councilman Bobby Henon has pledged to cover the cost of the initial phase of the community’s appeal seeking to bar a methadone clinic from opening on the Frankford Avenue commercial corridor, asking that they “send me a bill.”
The Holmesburg Civic Association and some State Road businesses have entered into an agreement with NorthEast Treatment Centers that will allow for a methadone clinic to open in the neighborhood. The agreement follows a recent court victory by NET, which plans to open a clinic at 7520 and 7550 State Road.
Many in the East Kensington community said at a meeting last week that they are concerned about the effects a methadone facility could have on the surrounding neighborhood, especially if the facility increases the number of clients it serves.
Mayfair and Holmesburg remain relatively stable communities in Philadelphia’s greatest section, the Great Northeast, so it should come as no surprise that the good folks who live and do business there — and the politicians who represent them — are coming out of the woodwork to prevent the area from becoming a magnet for drug addicts.
