    In Summertime, Smokey the Bear increases his vigilance. But he need not fear every whiff of smoke. After all, it’s barbecue season. As we move into July and August, the smell of grilled goodies fills the air. Many celebrations and picnics over the summer include foods cooked outdoors. It’s the time to get out of the kitchen.

U.S. Sen. Edmund Muskie was the keynote speaker, but music and rock bands carried the tune of the day.

Merrymaking continues and culminates with the festivities this year on Feb. 17 - Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, aka Shrove Tuesday, the final day of Carnival.
