The Eastern Atlantic States Carpenter Technical College last week helped the Liberty Bell Youth Organization Patriots get ready for some football.

Retired carpenters Jim McDonald, who is president of Liberty Bell, and Jim Giorla were on hand as two representatives of the carpenters college used a highly technical robotic total station and a software program to measure the field to make it easier for LBYO officials to line the field.

Second-year apprentice Bryan Minus performed the work, under the tutelage of Ron Walsh, instructor for carpenter apprentices. They placed 120 yards of string – 100 yards for the field and 10 yards for each end zone – while also marking every 5 yards.

This is the third year the carpenters college, based at 10401 Decatur Road, has helped LBYO prep the field.

“They did a phenomenal job,” McDonald said.

Meanwhile, a city crew installed the two goal posts, which had been taken down for baseball season.

Liberty Bell, which uses Lloyd Sixsmith Sporting Goods for its equipment, started football practice at the end of July, with the season starting in September. Others that use the field, at Red Lion and Calera roads, are the Archbishop Ryan JV football team, LaBrum Middle School and the Northeast Suburban Athletic Conference (NESAC).

LBYO will now be able to more easily line both sidelines, goal lines and backs of the end zones, along with yard lines every 5 yards. ••
