White discusses importance of trade skill education

At a hearing to learn more about the challenges facing businesses and workers in the Northeast, state Rep. Martina White concluded that the state needs to refocus education, in part, to prepare students for jobs in the building trades.

‘Fur Follies’ benefit scheduled at Katie O’Donnell’s

Knights of Columbus St. Joseph the Worker Council 4215 recently dedicated a pavilion at the Delaware Valley Veterans Home, at Southampton Road and Roosevelt Boulevard.

Event to aid trap/neuter/return programs is Sunday

Best Friends Animal Society and Handcraft Workshop have partnered for an upcoming event to support their trap/neuter/return programs. The event will be held on Sunday, June 7 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Handcraft Workshop, 7224 Germantown Ave. Volunteers are needed to cut fabric, pin, iron and fold completed trap covers. These covers help keep community cats calm in TNR traps so their journeys to the spay/neuter clinic and back to their outdoor homes are less stressful. Scholarship winners honored

The Joseph C. McCloskey Charitable Fund recently announced its scholarship winners. The Elizabeth McCloskey Memorial Scholarship went to Regina Moran and Dominque Labovitz. The John C. Sullivan Jr. Memorial Scholarship was given to Christopher Zelenenki and Joseph McHugh III. In all, $12,000 was given to the winning students. The students were honored at a ceremony at the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 39 hall. 

Local state representative joins House Judiciary Committee

State Rep. Jason Dawkins has been appointed to serve on the House Judiciary Committee for the remainder of the 2015-16 legislative session.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput was the main celebrant during a Liturgy of the Word before an Academic Honors Convocation at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

Home run derby proceeds will benefit CHOP and baseball scholarship

The 11th annual Andrew Farrell Spirit of Courage Fund Home Run Derby will take place on Saturday, June 6, at George Washington High School, 10175 Bustleton Ave. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and the contest begins at 10. The cost is $25.
