Mayfair native and U.S. Air Force Col. Margaret Meg (Lockhead) Carey recently announced her retirement from active duty after a distinguished 26-year military career.

In her final active duty appointment, Carey commanded the 92nd Medical Group at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash. The group was supported by three squadrons delivering reliable patient-centered health-care services to 38,000 members of the 92nd Air Refueling Wing, along with 17 partner units and the surrounding community. Carey commanded a 300-person team and oversaw a $31 million financial program to ensure readiness and operational support for a full range of military missions.

Carey is the daughter of Charles and Rita Lockhead, also of Mayfair. She graduated from St. Hubert’s Catholic High School for Girls in 1981 and cum laude with a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing from Thomas Jefferson University in 1985.

Carey was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force as a first lieutenant in May 1991. She was competitively selected to pursue study as a pediatric nurse practitioner through an Air Force Institute of Technology Scholarship, culminating in her master’s of science degree in nursing from the University of Florida.

Carey has held nursing and leadership positions with increasing responsibility at the squadron, group and air staff levels at Air Force installations throughout the world.

After an extensive RV tour of the U.S. and Canada, Carey plans to settle with her husband Curt and their family in Florida. ••
