City officials on Friday unveiled new play equipment, resurfaced basketball courts and other improvements at Dorsey Playground, 6501 Hegerman St., in Tacony.

Sixth District Councilman Bobby Henon, Parks & Recreation Deputy Commissioner Orlando Rendon, Robb Reichard from the Wissinoming Civic Association and local children participated in the ribbon-cutting event.

“It was such a thrill to walk up and see the park today and see the beautiful new equipment (and) basketball courts, and that was exciting,” Reichard said to a crowd of about 25 youngsters. “But what really made me excited about this park today was seeing you all out there playing.”

The $715,000 project included two new play areas, the courts and an ADA-accessible ramp. Henon said it also involved repairing the playground’s “spray park.”

The renovations are part of the city’s Rebuild initiative to improve libraries, parks and recreation centers. The program is funded by the soda tax. ••
