St. Matt’s student wins spelling bee

Joseph Tangradi, a student at St. Matthew Elementary School, was the winner of Archbishop Ryan High School’s 13th annual invitational spelling bee for seventh-graders.

As the winner, Joseph took home a four-year, $2,000 scholarship to Ryan.

The spelling bee ended after a record 26 rounds. The winning word was “hemorrhage.”

Finishing in second place was Amanda Gallagher, of Maternity BVM. She was awarded a four-year, $1,000 scholarship to Ryan.

Emily Beck, of St. Ephrem School in Bensalem, finished third. She captured a four-year, $500 scholarship.

The event featured 50 seventh-grade students from 16 Catholic elementary schools in Philadelphia and Bucks County. ••
