Rec center worker, volunteer neighbor honored at Holmesburg Community Day

Holmesburg Recreation Center on Saturday hosted Holmesburg Community Day.

The day featured an appearance by longtime WXPN Kids Corner host Kathy O’Connell; a visit by Engine 36; door prizes; a demonstration of the new voting machines; a performance by the cast of an upcoming production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; vendors; and hot dogs courtesy of City Councilman Bobby Henon and grilled by the 15th Police District Advisory Council.

The cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat gave a preview of their upcoming performance at Saturday’s Holmesburg Community Day.

Ditman Street resident Ken Allen was honored for welcoming new residents and volunteering to clean up around the recreation center. Bill Arthur, the recreation leader, presented Allen with a plaque. Henon gave him a certificate of appreciation and a giant key to the rec center.

Recreation center employee Fran Walker was honored for 20 years on the job. Walker was described as a nice guy and a mentor who gives out good advice. He recently started a flag football program and has long been dedicated to youth sports, particularly making sure there were opportunities for girls.

Henon presented Walker with a Council citation. State Sen. John Sabatina Jr. presented him with a Senate citation. State Reps. Mike Driscoll and Joe Hohenstein presented him with a House citation that was also sponsored by Rep. Kevin Boyle.
