McMenamin Family ShopRite recently held its annual “Help Bag Hunger” day at its supermarkets at 9910 Frankford Ave. and 11000 Roosevelt Blvd.

Helping out at the Frankford Avenue store were officers from the 8th Police District, firefighters from Engine 46, staffers for state Rep. Ed Neilson and cheerleaders from St. Hubert.

Store director Kevin McMenamin welcomed the 7th Police District, Engine 62 and the office of state Rep. Martina White for bagging duties at the Boulevard store.

September is national Hunger Action Month. ShopRite’s theme this year is Fighting Hunger is Music to Our Ears.

Since 1999, ShopRite’s Partners in Caring has donated some $50 million to food banks in six states.

Frankford Avenue store manager Mike Semeriglia and front-end manager Michelina Hellyer explained that, during the period from late August to late September, customers are invited to either round up their bill to the nearest dollar or contribute $1, $3 or $5 to the fund. A raffle on Sept. 14 also raised money, and the Dunkin’ in the same shopping center donated coffee.

ShopRite makes a donation, too, and a portion of General Mills sales goes to the fund.

Semeriglia and Hellyer said they are grateful for customer donations at a time of high inflation and grocery and gas prices. ••
