The theme of PAL is, “Cops Helping Kids.” All 26 PAL facilities in Philadelphia are supervised by trained, on-duty police officers.

The program was founded in 1947. Centers offer free educational, athletic, recreational and cultural programs for boys and girls. They are supported by contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations and government sources.

The Oxford Circle PAL offers a homework club Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 5:30 p.m. for youngsters 6 to 12; open-court basketball Mondays through Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for boys and girls 14 to 18; indoor touch football with Arena League rules for boys and girls 6 to 14; and indoor whiffle ball for boys and girls 6 to 14.

In other news from the Friends of Summerdale Civic Association meeting, held on Oct. 20:

• Patrice Nuble, of the city Department of Streets, explained that Summerdale Avenue, from Roosevelt Boulevard to Oxford Avenue, will get a much needed repaving and re-striping.

Nuble said the streets department hopes to perform the work “sooner than later,” but added that the job might have to wait until next spring if temperatures dip below 40 degrees.

In addition, Nuble asked community members whether they wanted to prohibit parking along Summerdale Avenue from the Boulevard to Fillmore Terrace. Right now, parking is prohibited only 100 feet north of the crosswalk at the Boulevard.

If the ban is extended, it would affect four parking spots.

The proposal addresses the decades-old issue of vehicles turning left from the Boulevard onto Summerdale Avenue, which narrows from two lanes to one for northbound traffic. The extended parking ban would alleviate some congestion and could lessen the chances of an accident as traffic merges.

Pat Trinkle, an aide to City Councilwoman Marian Tasco, listened to feedback. The councilwoman will make the final decision.

• Mark Mroz, the community relations officer in the 2nd Police District, said auto thefts are on the rise in the district.

“They’re stealing Hondas left and right,” he said.

• Houseman Recreation Center, at 5091 Summerdale Ave. (at Godfrey Avenue), held its first Zumba class on Oct. 21. The fitness class will be offered every Friday at 7 p.m.

There is a one-time registration fee of $5. Each class costs $5. For more information, call 215–685–1240.

• The Friends of Summerdale Civic Association will meet again on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., at Houseman Recreation Center. ••
