Funeral services set for Rev. Paul Quinter, pastor at Maternity BVM

Funeral services have been set for the Rev. Paul S. Quinter, pastor of Maternity BVM Parish, who died on March 22. Quinter, 68, who died of cancer, spent his final weeks in the hospice program at Villa Saint Joseph in Darby.

Quinter is survived by his sisters, Eileen Wittig (the late Brian), Kathleen (Greg) and Maureen (Dave) and his brother, Christopher (Julie). He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Brian, Kevin, Rene’, Christopher, Grace, Ryan, Faith and Ava and other family and friends.

Quinter attended St. Helena Elementary School and Cardinal Dougherty High School. He studied at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and was ordained in 1982 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul by John Cardinal Krol.

In addition to receiving two degrees in Sacred Theology from Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1986 and 1987, he received a master’s degree from Columbia University School of Journalism in 1988. He received a Doctor of Humane Letters from Holy Family College in 1994. He served as editor of The Catholic Standard & Times from 1991 to 2001. He also was the Delegate of the Archbishop to pro-life organizations during that time.

Quinter became pastor of St. Monica Parish in South Philadelphia in 2001. In 2003, he was appointed the director of the English language edition of L’Osservatore Romano, the official newspaper of the Holy See. In 2008, he was installed as pastor of Maternity BVM.

A viewing is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Maternity BVM, 9220 Old Bustleton Ave. A parish Mass will follow at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, April 4, a viewing will be held from 8 to 10:50 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11, celebrated by Archbishop Nelson Perez.

Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Quinter’s memory to the Miraculous Medal Shrine, 500 East Chelten Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19150.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord. May perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. ••
