Dr. Larry Kaiser, president and CEO of Temple University Health System, announced last week that Linda Benfield Grass will step down after 12 years as CEO at Jeanes Hospital, effective March 6, and that Dr. Marc Hurowitz has been named as her successor.
Hurowitz will become CEO on March 7.
Grass has been at Jeanes Hospital for 30 years, during which she served in a variety of leadership roles, including vice president of clinical and support services and VP of operations.
In 1992, she served as the administrative lead during construction of Jeanes Hospital’s patient tower.
After becoming CEO in 2003, she presided over Jeanes Hospital’s most significant growth period, when the hospital established programs that included heart care, bariatric surgery, spine and orthopaedics, in addition to an expansion of emergency services with accredited stroke care.
Under her leadership, Jeanes was selected as a Hospital of Choice by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers.
“Linda Grass’ service to Jeanes Hospital has been an enduring and impressive story, and her decision to step down truly marks the end of an era,” Kaiser said. “We thank her for three decades of service to Jeanes Hospital and Temple Health, and for 12 years of outstanding leadership.”
Hurowitz also will continue to lead Temple Physicians Inc., the Health System’s network of community-based primary-care and specialty-physicians practices.
An assistant professor of family and community medicine, Hurowitz joined Temple University Hospital in 2009 as associate chief medical officer and previously served as the chief medical officer of Northeastern Hospital until its closure and subsequent transformation into an ambulatory-care facility.
Prior to his administrative role at Northeastern Hospital, Hurowitz ran a large private practice that was subsequently incorporated into the primary and multi-specialty TPI practice located in Fishtown. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Jeanes Hospital has been a member of the Temple University Health System since 1996.
