Foundation presents Judge senior Purcell with scholarship

Matthew Dominic Purcell from Father Judge High School was a winner in the annual Washington Crossing Foundation National Scholarship Competition.

The awards are granted to high school seniors for the best all-around presentations, including an explanation of why they are planning careers in government service.

The Bristol-based foundation awarded $83,500 in 2019 to 39 seniors across the country.

Purcell, who will graduate June 6, ranked first in his class and is vice president of the National Honor Society. He was on the Salesian Leadership Initiative, where he promoted spirituality and organized service projects. He was an active member and leader of Mathletes, Presidential Delegates and Student Council. He received Rookie of the Year and All-Catholic awards for swimming and track and field and the Scholar-Athlete Award for three years. He has received academic excellence awards, magna cum laude for the National Latin Exam, Campus Ministry Award and Neumann Scholarship. He will pursue a career in civil engineering at Notre Dame.
