Special People In Northeast, a nonprofit organization that provides services to children and adults with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities, accepted a $200,000 grant from state Sen. John Sabatina and Rep. Mike Driscoll as more than 100 clients, relatives and staff gathered at SPIN’s newly renovated community center on Aug. 7.

The allocation from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development will allow SPIN to upgrade the lighting in its facilities to meet environmental regulations.

“I’m so pleased to help secure this funding for SPIN, which truly is a gem in the Northeast and is making a major difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs,” Sabatina said. “This state investment will help make necessary upgrades and ensure that SPIN continues to provide incredible services in our community.”

The grant allows SPIN to reallocate funding into its programs.

“Sen. Sabatina and Rep. Driscoll have long supported SPIN’s services and programs,” SPIN CEO Kathy Brown-McHale said. “This grant will directly benefit people in our services, families and the community.”

The new grant comes on the heels of a recent major renovation to SPIN’s headquarters, formerly known as the Norcom Community Center, at 10980 Norcom Road. The center has been rebranded as SPIN Community & Fitness and features a fully equipped fitness center with a unique environment that is motivating, supportive and welcoming.

“We’re thrilled to share the excitement of our newly revamped community center,” Brown-McHale said. “This has always been a welcoming place where people make friends and break barriers on the road to healthy lives. Our new name unites SPIN’s vision of a world that values and includes everyone with the center’s innovative fitness and recreational programs.”

SPIN Community & Fitness offers a top-flight team of fitness professionals and affordable memberships. The center hosts fitness classes, personal training, cardio, functional fitness, weight-training, spinning and group training. A mobile app, SPINComFit, makes involvement in fitness activities a breeze with the ability to sign up for classes, learn about upcoming events and more.

Founded in 1970, SPIN is also a leading provider of inclusive early childhood education. The organization supports 3,500 children and adults annually in Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. ••
