St. Hubert will hold its ninth annual summer fun day trip on Monday, June 17. Debate over judicial nominee
A group of Democratic state and local elected officials issued a statement urging the U.S. Senate to move forward with considering President Joe Biden’s nominee, Adeel Mangi, to the Philadelphia-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. If confirmed, Mangi would become the first Muslim American to serve on a federal appeals court.
Issuing the statement were state Reps. Tarik Khan, Arvind Venkat, Patty Kim and Jason Dawkins, state Sens. Nikil Saval and Sharif Street, Montgomery County Commissioner Neil Makhija and City Councilwoman Nina Ahmad.
They wrote, “Mr. Mangi is an excellent candidate and highly qualified individual whose nomination is now at risk due to a right-wing smear campaign tainted with Islamophobic rhetoric and outright lies. We are extremely disturbed that the nomination of a highly qualified judicial nominee would be in doubt because of the fact he is Muslim.”
Mangi will likely not be confirmed, as Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin, Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto are opposed.
Some law enforcement groups are also opposed, citing Mangi’s affiliation with the Alliance of Families for Justice, a prison reform organization that has advocated for the release of some cop killers. ••

New pathology professor at Fox Chase
Fox Chase Cancer Center announced the hiring of Dr. Simon Sung as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology.
Prior to coming to Fox Chase, Sung was an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York from August 2022 through February 2024 and from July 2018 through October 2020. He was also an assistant professor and associate director of the Cytology Fellowship Program in the Department of Pathology at Montefiore Medical Center, the university hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York.
Sung earned his undergraduate degree from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He completed an anatomic pathology residency at Columbia University Medical Center – New York Presbyterian Hospital and a fellowship in cytopathology at Weill Cornell Medical College – New York Presbyterian Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in general surgical pathology at Columbia University Medical Center.
Sung has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed articles in such journals as Cancer Cytopathology, Diagnostic Cytopathology, the European Journal of Neuroscience and the American Journal of Neuroradiology. He was awarded the National Institutes of Health Summer Research Grant in 2010, the Sigmund L. Wilens Prize for Excellence in Pathology in 2013 and the Intersociety Council for Pathology Information Trainee Travel Award in 2016.
He is currently a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society of Cytopathology, the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the College of American Pathologists. ••
Modernization at Roosevelt Rehab
Roosevelt Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, 7800 Bustleton Ave., is celebrating a renovation milestone, marking the Phase 1 completion of a multi-million-dollar modernization at the skilled nursing facility. The 240-bed center provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.
“Roosevelt is being completely transformed into a modern, home-like environment for residents – one that accommodates progressive skilled nursing care and services,” said Danielle Koons, senior regional director of market development for Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports Roosevelt and is spearheading the renovation. “There is nothing like it in Northeast Philadelphia.”
A centerpiece of the renovation to date is the addition of a 3,600-square-foot rehab therapy gym and the incorporation of a spacious activities of daily living suite. The gym features state-of-the-art equipment, including a Smart Car and other technology to support the delivery of progressive rehab services. In addition, the ADL suite mimics a home environment with a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom – enabling patients the opportunity to regain skills before returning home.
Renovation highlights also include modernized dining area and lounges as well as updates to resident rooms and nurses’ stations.
“The Roosevelt and Marquis teams are thrilled to celebrate this milestone and are excited about the plans underway in Phase 2 of this ambitious project,” Koons said. “The ongoing modernization includes the addition of a new dialysis den to support Roosevelt’s Chronic Kidney Disease Management program.”

American short stories will be the subject of a new six-part program for active adults to be held at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., beginning on Thursday, May 2.
