The McMenamin Family ShopRite at 9910 Frankford Ave. (at Morrell Avenue) last week hosted Harvesting Hope to End Hunger, an event to honor employees who aid the store’s fundraising activities.

ShopRite associates in six states participated in a friendly competition to raise money to support food banks in communities they serve. The supermarket has been overseeing the fundraiser for 23 years.

At the Frankford and Morrell store, employees collected donations from customers and organized dine-in and takeout events at local eateries.

In all, 285 ShopRite stores from Connecticut to Maryland raised some $1.56 million.

At the March 20 event at the Frankford and Morrell store, two employees were honored for spearheading the fundraising activities.

Those employees – cashier Loretta Connelly and deli manager Andrea Sonday – are featured on special-edition Cheerios boxes that are being sold exclusively at ShopRite stores during March.

For Connelly, it’s the second time she’s appeared on a Cheerios Box.

This year, the ShopRite of Morrell Plaza raised $12,000 for Philabundance.

General Mills supports ShopRite in its Partners in Caring fundraising initiative.

By being among the top 52 stores in fundraising, the ShopRite at Frankford and Morrell was able to designate an additional $2,500 to be donated to a local food pantry. Employees selected the newly opened food pantry at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital.

Sean McMenamin and Bria McMenamin, who operate two family-owned stores, were in attendance. Store manager Mike Semeriglia thanked 8th Police District community relations officer Chris Hanejko and the office of state Rep. Ed Neilson for taking part in a recent “Help Bag Hunger” day. ••
