Crime and library and rec center upgrades on the agenda in Lawncrest

The Lawncrest Community Association addressed the following topics at last week’s meeting:

• Sgt. Matthew Lowe and community relations officer Mark Mroz, of the 2nd Police District, provided crime updates. Mroz spoke of a businessman who was pepper sprayed and robbed of $27,500 at 700 Adams Ave. as he was on his way to make a bank deposit. Lowe mentioned there were just two homicides in the district in 2019, compared to 12 last year. However, a few hours after the meeting, a man was shot to death on the 400 block of Van Kirk St.

• Alice Dignam, the leader at Lawncrest Recreation Center, and an official from Community Ventures said a design team has visited the rec center and Lawncrest Library. Rebuild Philadelphia will put $5 million into the rec center and $4.5 million into the library. A community meeting is set for January.

• George’s Luncheonette, 6000 Tabor Ave., was named Business of the Month.

George’s Luncheonette was named Business of the Month by the Lawncrest Community Association.

• Members overwhelmingly approved, with just two people in opposition, a request to legalize a triplex at 653 Sanger St., as long as owner Sergio Polyakov shortens the fence. Attorney Ryan Boland represented Polyakov.

• State Sen. Tina Tartaglione will hold two Senior Expos on upcoming Thursdays. The first will be on Oct. 3, at Lawncrest Recreation Center, 6000 Rising Sun Ave. The second will be on Oct. 10, at Mayfair Community Center, 2990 St. Vincent St. The time for both events is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free health screenings and exhibits. Call 215-533-0440.

• The Philadelphia Protestant Home dining services department is hiring cooks, prep cooks, waitstaff and utility staff. To schedule an interview, reliable people can call Victoria Carr at 215-697-8040.

• LCA president Bill Dolbow will have even more time to devote to the civic association now that he is accepting a buyout from the auditor general’s office. Dolbow, the Southeast regional director, will retire Oct. 28.

• Activate Wellness Studio, a smoothie and juice bar, will open on Oct. 12 at 7259 Rising Sun Ave.

• The Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at St. William’s Monsignor Mortimer Memorial Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
