O’Neill offers solutions to rising property assessments

City Councilman Brian O’Neill has introduced legislation in response to recent property assessment increases.

Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.) is alarmed at increased property assessments.

The bills introduced would increase the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $50,000 and require revenue-neutral property assessments.

“Ninety percent of residential properties in my district received increases in their 2020 assessments. That is unacceptable,” O’Neill said.

The homestead exemption bill is cosponsored by 11 Council members.

The revenue-neutral legislation is cosponsored by Council members Allan Domb, Bobby Henon, Al Taubenberger, Cindy Bass, Jannie Blackwell and Kenyatta Johnson.

“The proposed revenue neutral tax bill will provide City Council with the oversight to make the city more fiscally responsible. It will eliminate the city’s ability to increase revenues by raising homeowners’ property values. More importantly, it maintains full funding levels for our schools and for the city’s essential services,” Domb said.
