Burholme backs daycare expansion

Land of Happy Kids, 1401 Cottman Ave., wants to grow from 20 to 40 youngsters.

The Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association last week voted, 10–3, to support a businesswoman’s bid to expand Land of Happy Kids, a day care at Cottman and Whitaker avenues.

The facility can legally care for 20 children on the first floor, but the owner wants to be able to care for another 20 children on the second floor.

Some people raised concerns about double parking, traffic and dropoffs and the site’s proximity to a bus stop.

A Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing is set for 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 18.

The day care is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The age range is 6 weeks to 12 years old. Kids 5 or older who come for after-school care will be on the second floor.

The owner, who has operated the business since January, will add a second fire escape.

In other news from the Oct. 12 meeting, 2nd Police District Lt. Ron Janka provided a crime report and said the district will decorate a car, which will travel around to hand out candy on Halloween.

The Philadelphia Historical Commission continued last week’s hearing on whether to make Trinity Church, Oxford’s parish house historic, thwarting the church’s bid to lease land to Royal Farms.

City Councilman Brian O’Neill has three events on upcoming Saturdays. A recycling bin giveaway will take place on Oct. 21 at his office at 432 Rhawn St. A shredding event is scheduled for Nov. 4 at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road. An electronic recycling event is set for Nov. 18 at his office at 1701 Bowler St. Hours for each event are 9 a.m. to noon.

CORA Services, 8540 Verree Road, will host a community conversation on drug addiction on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a discussion on recovery and training on how to administer Narcan to reverse overdoses. To register, call 215–342–7660.

CORA will hold its Champions for Children fundraiser on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Union League, 140 S. Broad St. More information is at coraservices.org

Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association will meet again on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Wesley Enhanced Living, 7040 Oxford Ave. ••
