Oldtimers Bats and Balls Association founder dies

A viewing was held last week at Burns Funeral Home in Torresdale for Chuck Newns, who organized the popular quarterly Oldtimers Bats and Balls Association meetings at Randi’s Restaurant & Bar.

Newns died on July 3. He was 82.

Newns is survived by his wife Phyllis; stepchildren Tricia McGovern (Keith) and Fred Radtke (Shannon); step-grandchildren Keith, Hayden and Emma; and his brother, Jack.

Interment was private.

Contributions can be made in his memory to Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, 8085 Saltsburg Road, Suite 201, Pittsburgh, PA 15239, Attn: Mark Campbell, CFO UMDF.

Newns was a longtime sports official. He was one of the founders of the Oldtimers Bats and Balls Association, a group of former athletes and officials that meets four times a year at Randi’s.

The meetings usually attract more than 100 guests, and Newns used his old referee’s whistle to quiet the crowd when it was time to distribute awards. ••
