Phanatic visits All Saints Episcopal School for reading program

A special appearance: The Phillie Phanatic visited All Saints Episcopal School last week to reward the school’s kindergarten class pupils for their participation in the Phillies’ “Be a Phanatic About Reading” program.

The Phillie Phanatic brought his trademarked brand of wholesome lunacy to the All Saints Episcopal School last week. Baseball’s favorite mascot knocked over an amp, cavorted and danced with teachers in front of some 70 very amazed — and giggling — little kids in the Frankford Avenue school’s auditorium.

But then, decorum is not what the Phanatic is all about.

However, in this case, there was some serious business behind the big green whatchamacallit’s visit. The Phanatic was there to reward the school’s kindergarten class pupils for their participation in the Phillies’ “Be a Phanatic About Reading” program.

They won a school assembly with the Phanatic, said teacher Sarah Traverse, for reading or being read to every day. Traverse, using a book provided by the Phils, read to the kids as the furry mascot acted out the plot.

It wasn’t the usual reading matter of All Saints’ kindergartners. Interviewed as they lined up to go to the auditorium before the Phanatic’s appearance, the kids said they liked Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk. In other words, the classics. ••
