Tacony Baptist Church, 4715 Disston St., for the second year in a row led a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in the neighborhood.

This year, Tacony Baptist teamed with a neighbor church, Holy Innocents St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, at Torresdale and Tyson avenues, to clean up adjacent streets.

Returning to join the effort were City Councilman Mike Driscoll and state Rep. Pat Gallagher and their staffs, along with the Northeast Philadelphia Development Corporation, Tacony Community Development Corporation, Tacony Civic Association and Boys Scouts/Cub Scouts Troop 372.

“We’ve had great support,” said Pastor Evelyn Barnes, of Tacony Baptist.

The day also included lunch and a food giveaway by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

The Rev. Brian Rallison, rector of Holy Innocents St. Paul’s, was happy to see a big contingent from Troop 372, which meets in his church, cleaning up Tyson Avenue in Monday’s bitter cold.

“We have to be the change,” he said.

As for the King holiday, Barnes said the crew was “celebrating through service.”

“We expect this to be the second of many,” she said. “We hope to continue to grow the effort so everyone catches the dream.” ••
