The Northeast Philadelphia Chinese Association on Saturday afternoon held a grand opening event at Northeast Regional Library.

The association is based at 6434 Castor Ave. Its mission is to assist the growing Chinese population in the areas of culture, education, language and the economy. It seeks to build strong families and foster community engagement. Most Chinese people in the Northeast live in Mayfair and Castor Gardens.

The group incorporated in March and has spent the last six months reaching out to local Chinese-Americans. Saturday’s event was a formal introduction to the larger community.

Pearl Mingchu Huynh serves as president.

The day featured dancing, kung fu demonstrations, a ribbon cutting, speeches and food. Melanie Huynh, Pearl’s niece and a sixth-grader at St. Cecilia Elementary School, sung the national anthem.

Among those in attendance were U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle; City Councilmen David Oh and Al Taubenberger; state Sen. Tina Tartaglione; state Rep. Helen Tai, the first Chinese-American woman elected to the legislature; and Andrew Dalzell, chief of staff to state Rep. Jared Solomon, who had a U.S. Army Reserve obligation.

The association has used Northeast Regional Library as a resource, and librarian Peter Lehu welcomed the entire Chinese community to take advantage of its books, classes and programs. He also invited them to a job fair on Oct. 5.

Gov. Tom Wolf sent a written greeting.
