IUPAT District Council 21 hosts successful blood drive

More than 100 people last week donated blood at an event sponsored by IUPAT District Council 21, 2980 Southampton Road.

The union teamed with the American Red Cross because hospitals, specifically emergency rooms, are desperate for blood donations.

“The shortage of blood across the country is a severe problem in the wake of COVID-19, and our union is here to support our community and our country by hosting a blood drive to help patients whose lives are on the line here,” said DC 21 Business Manager Joe Ashdale. “Thank you to the Red Cross for drawing attention to this critical issue and helping us make this happen.”

Ashdale was among those who donated blood. So was U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick.

Terri Boylan, a Red Cross team supervisor, said her agency has had to cancel other blood drives as the Philadelphia area has shut down during the pandemic.

“The supply was extremely low,” she said.

The Red Cross took the temperature of each donor, and workers used gloves and facemasks and wiped down all equipment after it was used by each donor.

In all, more than 90 pints were donated.

“We’re extremely busy because of the need,” Boylan said. “We’re overwhelmed with donations. It’s been a nice response.” ••
