Because of the kindness of our readers, the Northeast Times this week was able to mail gift cards to 103 families who have let us know that they could use a little help at Christmas time.
The $50 gift cards — good at ShopRite and Walmart — are intended to help these families buy the ingredients for a good holiday dinner and purchase a toy for each of their children.
We are grateful to our readers who are in a position to give. Over and over again, they’ve told us they want to be sure each child has at least one gift waiting under the tree on Christmas morning.
This annual appeal, now called the Northeast Times’ Eleanor Smylie Fund, was launched 57 years ago. Last year, we were able to help nearly 120 families. The need this year seems to be even greater.
